Murrah is considered as the best buffalo breed and is used as improver breed in entire country. Nili Ravi of Punjab is also a good breed.
Sahiwal is considered as the best cattle breed.
The defined buffalo breeds should strictly undergo selective breeding/ progeny testing, whereas non-descript buffaloes should be upgraded with Murrah sires.
Ghungroo breed of swine is the indigenous breed having highest body weight and litter size as compare to other indigenous swine breeds, so it is most suitable indigenous pig breed for commercial farming.
Breed characteristics, peak yield, 305 days milk yield, Dam’s best yield, age at puberty/ first calving, service period, and calving interval are important economic traits which should be taken under consideration.
The overly heavy bulls are not desirable as they may have poor libido and semen quality. Further, their body size is not related to their genetic potential for milk. You should always consider a bull with good dam’s / daughters performance.
Seven generations of consecutive grading-up will give >99% Murrah blood. However, you can get >90% Murrah in four generations.

You can register and book chicks at hatchery of the Livestock Farms, GADVASU.
One buck, no matter how good, should not be used for prolonged periods in a herd, as it may increase inbreeding. You should replace it after 2-3 years. If a nearby farmer has a good buck, you may exchange.
