Feed and Fodder
January
- Cloudy conditions / fog affect the growth of berseem. Do not use extra urea in the field at this time.
- In the fields of berseem, if you find cotton-like stalks, dig them up and throw them out of the field.
- To control stem borer in berseem, spray 400 gms of Bavistin per acre in 200 liters of water.
- Start sowing of maize (PMH-1, DKC 9108 etc.) from January 20 for making silage.
February
- Depending on the weather and soil, irrigate berseem every 10-15 days.
- Make silage of extra barley fodder in late February and early March.
- Sow maize to make silage.
March
- Sow maize, millet and mixed fodder (maize + cowpea or bajra + cowpea) this month.
- Hybrid napier or guinea grass can also be sown by this month.
- Make hay from extra berseem fodder.
- To control weeds, use 500-800 gms of Atrazine per acre in maize and 200 gms in millet within two days after sowing.
April
- Sow MP Chari and spray 400 gms of Atrazine per acre for weeds within two days after sowing.
- For balanced fodder, mix sorghum with guar and sow.
- Dig up the berseem plants to prepare berseem seeds.
- Spray 50 ml Corazon (18.5 SC) per acre to control alfalfa weevil and do not use crop for fodder.
May
- Use silage when green fodder supply is short.
- After opening the silo pit, it is necessary to extract the silage from it every day.
- Never cover the empty part of the pit with sheet.
- Be sure to cultivate legumes (guar, lobia, etc.) with summer fodder (chari, bajra, etc.).
- To prevent weed in maize, spray 2,4-D, 400 ml per acre two days after sowing.
- Prepare silage by harvesting maize corn sown in spring.
- In dry days, water the crop before cutting the fodder.
June
- Harvest berseem early in rainy season.
- Continue with sowing of kharif fodder.
- Keep harvesting fodder at the right time, don't let them ripe.
- Start harvesting maize crop when grains are milky and soft.
July
- Grow green fodder as much needed. When growing in large quantities, keep green fodder piles against the wall.
- Do not pile up chopped green fodder.
- Do not feed green fodder to animals which have not been irrigated on time.
- In drought conditions water the crop one week before harvest.
- Start harvesting when the chari is in the milky stage.
- Sow cowpea variety 88 by the end of July and CL 367 in the first week of August.
- Sow cowpea mixed with maize and guar with chari.
August
- Spray Atrazine on maize, sorghum and bajra after mid-August to prevent weeds.

October
- Sow berseem by the first week of October.
- Add 6 tons of manure and 125 kg single superphosphate per acre in berseem.
- Where manure has not been applied, apply 185 kg single superphosphate with 22 kg urea per acre.
- Lucerne, senji and oats should be sown in this month.
November
- Complete sowing of oats in early November.
- For mixed fodder of oats and mustard / rye, apply 750 gms of mustard / rye seeds per acre with oats.
- Apply 33 kg urea and 50 kg single superphosphate per acre at the time of sowing and 33 kg urea per acre 30-40 days after sowing.
December
- Berseem sown in sandy, alkaline and low organic matter soils are deficient in manganese.
- Two to three sprays of 0.5 per cent solution of manganese sulphate can make up for the deficiency. The first spray should be done two weeks after the first cut of berseem and the rest at weekly intervals thereafter.
