Q1. What is the status of extension education in GADVASU, Ludhiana?

The university has a well-structured program for extension education and transfer of technologies related to animal health, livestock production, fisheries and value addition to the end users.

The University has adopted a well-designed Extension Model to reach to the livestock, poultry and fish farmers, field functionaries, subject matter specialists, industry people and other related communities. This model includes many activities and services that have been explained in subsequent queries.

The University has adopted multi-pronged technique to transfer new technologies to livestock farmers. These services also help in identifying the researchable problems faced by the livestock farmers and provide new research issues to the scientists. The most common activities are:

  1. Pashu Palan Mela and Regional Kisan Melas
  2. Exhibitions
  3. Animal Health Camps/ Animal Welfare Camps
  4. Awareness Camps, Training Camps, Field Days

Pashu Palan Mela is one of the best approaches for transferring the technologies generated at the University to the livestock farmers of the State. It is usually a two day affair and it is celebrated twice a year in the months of March and September. More than one lakh farmers visit the venue on each day. It provides an excellent platform for convergence of various stakeholders like departments of the university, Government and private agencies involved in animal health, welfare and production aspects, and livestock farmers. The farmers get first hand knowledge through exhibitions of new technologies/ innovations for use in livestock and poultry farming. Kisan Melas are also organized at regional level in different KVKs and RRTCs of the university

Animal Welfare/Health Camps are being organized by various departments of the University under the aegis of Directorate of Extension Education. These are usually a one day affair. Repeat breeding, anoestrus and mastitis are the major problems encountered in the rural dairy animals. Owing to major chunk of the cases belonging to reproductive disorders, these camps are also known as Infertility Camps. Poor and marginal farmers also get benefitted through participation in these camps. Certain Gram Panchayats, NGOs, Cooperative Societies (Milkfed and Markfed), Government or Semi-Government Agencies like PAU, KVKs, ATMA, etc. and Banking Institutions often sponsor these camps. The gram panchayats, if they have sufficient funds, can approach the Directorate of Extension Education (0161-2553364) or Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education (0161-2414026) for organizing such camps in their villages.

Yes, University also organizes such camps. Awareness Camps or Field Days are helpful in disseminating information on a particular subject related to livestock, fishery and agriculture production. These camps are different from Animal Welfare Camps in that no treatment/operation is carried out in such camps. Various subject matter specialists deliver their lectures on specific topics in these camps. When the awareness camp is restricted to one theme only, then, it is termed as Field Day. These are organized almost every week by KVKs/ RRTCs of the university. Awareness camps can also be arranged at the request of gram panchayats provided the necessary funds have to be provided by the panchayat itself.
